In 2028, it will be France, the Czech Republic, with Budweis, and one of the two EFTA/EEA countries, Northern Macedonia and Montenegro, who will designate the European Capital of Culture. Budva and Skopje have been shortlisted in the competition for the title of European Capital of Culture 2028 in an EFTA/EEA country, candidate country or potential candidate.

The most significant art gathering in this part of Europe, the sixth Kaleidoscope of Culture in Novi Sad, from 7 September to 15 October, will present the world’s greatest artistic names, giants of Serbian culture and young artists on the rise, in the most important spatial legacies of the European Capital of Culture – the District and the network of cultural stations.

Already 10 Ukrainian cities support the candidacy of Rzeszów as the European Capital of Culture in 2029, declaring their interest and readiness to implement joint projects.

Meanwhile, the petition launched by EcocNews and addressed to the European Commission for Ukraine, as a country preparing to join the EU, to nominate a European Capital of Culture in 2030 is still alive here.

Having seen which Swedish cities are preparing to apply to become European Capital of Culture in 2029, we now see what the situation is in Poland, the other state that, together with Sweden, will have to nominate the ecoc. For Poland the deadline for submitting an application is September 2023.

On Saturday 15 July, Open Sound Festival, one of the legacy projects of Matera 2019, presents the final evening of the 2023 edition in the Pollino National Park, from 7.30 p.m., with Eugenio in Via Di Gioia and other guests, at sunset, in the wonderful setting of Mulino Iannarelli in San Severino Lucano (Potenza, Basilicata, Italy).

While the list of European Capitals of Culture in 2028 is gradually becoming clearer after the nomination of Budweis, from the Czech Republic, and the four French cities still on the short list, there is still a lot of uncertainty among the cities in the running for the 2029 capital.

As part of the approach activities for the European Capital of Culture year, Salzkammergut 2024 organised a jazz concert on 23 July in Bad Ischl.

From Thursday 6 to Saturday 8 July, Open Sound Festival 2023 arrives in Matera, European capital of culture for 2019. This is the concrete representation of the idea of Land Music Experience that characterises the Open Sound project identity: a rigorous investigation of the soundscape that meets sensitivity for new forms of expression, the courage of innovation that meets the ancestral power of origins. This is the leitmotif of an unmissable lineup that brings internationally renowned artists to some of the most iconic venues in the City of the Sassi.

The three European Capitals of Culture for 2024, Bad Ischl (Austria), Tartu (Estonia) and Bodo (Norway) have announced on their websites and social channels the dates of the opening ceremonies of their cultural programmes.

"The European Capital of Culture 2025 Nova Gorica - Gorizia has so far demonstrated a serious commitment to the project and significant advancement," European Commission announced last days. The European Capital of Culture 2025 Nova Gorica - Gorizia team (GO! 2025 and EGTC GO), together with the two mayors Samo Turel and Rodolfo Ziberna, reported on May 16 this year to the international commission of experts on the development of the project, and now the commission has published an encouraging report (ecoc-2025-novagorica-second-monitoring-report Attached to this news).

A team at Leeds Beckett University has produced, in partnership with another local authority, a user-friendly toolkit that may be of use, or at least a useful reference when planning events (big or small).

A total of 512,000 visitors, mainly from Luxembourg (60%) and France (27%), attended the 1,351 events and the corresponding 3,145 cultural activities that took place as part of the European Capital of Culture project in the years leading up to and during the title year itself, as well as in its closing phase at the beginning of 2023.

In 2030 there will be three countries to designate the European Capital of Culture: Cyprus, Belgium and one of the candidate countries to join the European Union.

Montpellier 2028, over the past few days, Pierre Soujol (President of the Community of Municipalities of the Pays de Lunel and Mayor of Lunel) hosted a press conference at the Lunel Arena, dedicated to the 2023 Candidacy Programme.
