In 2026 all eyes will turn to the North when Oulu and its 39 partner municipalities from Northern Finland will be filled with culture, art, and the power of community spirit. The cultural program is made together with local and European partners so that it can be seen and heard throughout Europe. The European Capital of Culture is the most important culture-related initiative of the European Union. And Ecocnews is the first and only newspaper to report on this competition on a European level and specifically.

In support of Ukrainian culture EcocNews has launched a petition for one of the three European Capitals of Culture to be chosen in 2030. We have reached over 300 signatures, but the petition is still open and can be found here. Another even more important initiative in support of Ukrainian culture is ZMINA: Rebuilding.

Their vision is to use arts and culture to fuel the social, economic and creative renaissance of their district; to make Bradford one of the most welcoming places in the UK where artists, producers, audiences and creative entrepreneurs can flourish. Bradford 2025 is looking for a head of audience to contribute to strategic plans for Bradford 2025 to develop and grow audiences across the Bradford district, nationally and internationally as well as develop and communicate the brand, their values and attract visitors both online and in person.
Deadline: Wednesday 13th September, 12pm. Interviews will take place on 20th September.

Burgos 2031, 34 proposals from 14 european countries

In 2031 it will be the turn of Spain and Malta to nominate the European capital of culture. For Spain it will be the fifth time after Madrid (1992), Santiago de Compostela (2000), Salamanca (2002) and San sebastian (2016). One of the first city to have decided to apply for European capital of culture for 2031 is Burgos with its motto: Renaissance.
The call for cultural projects of Burgos European Capital of Culture 2031 has closed with a broad participation of the local artistic network, which has presented 34 proposals that bring together creators from 14 European countries.

Starting from the designation of Matera as the European Capital of Culture 2019, the Lucania Film Festival inaugurates a new narrative window on Europe and invites foundations and international organizations that have submitted projects and won the title of European Capital of Culture to participate in the Short for Capital contest, to tell their experience and the impact generated in the urban context and on the territory of belonging.
